115 Guyanese graduate from inaugural Medvarsity programme

One hundred and fifteen Guyanese healthcare professionals have graduated from the inaugural Medvarsity Health Science Certificate Programme, strengthening the pool of skilled personnel available to support the country’s expanding healthcare system.

The graduates received their certificates on Monday during a ceremony at the Royal International Hotel and Mall in Georgetown. The event marks the first Medvarsity cohort in Guyana.

The programme is one of the government’s ongoing initiatives to build a world-class healthcare system by giving health workers greater opportunities to upgrade their knowledge and skills.

“You can’t have a world-class health system if you don’t have world-class professionals,” Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony said in his address to the gathering.

He said, “The only way that we can upskill our professionals is by giving them opportunities to train and upskill themselves.”

The minister said the training opportunities are particularly important as Guyana continues to expand and modernise its health infrastructure, noting that healthcare professionals must be equipped to meet patients’ changing needs, particularly in areas such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.

The course is Guyana’s Online Academy for Learning (GOAL) first-ever online healthcare science programme.

GOAL’s Director Professor Dr Jacob Opadeyi described the graduation as an important milestone in strengthening Guyana’s healthcare workforce, noting that the programme combined online learning with clinical observation to help graduates translate knowledge into practical skills.

He encouraged the graduates to continue developing professionally, build systems that improve patient care and remain compassionate in their service to the people of Guyana.

The graduates received certification in several specialised areas, including ECG interpretation, diabetic nutrition, critical care nursing, clinical oncology, and the essentials of cardiology.
